Halle
A city on the Saale in central Germany. In its suburb of Glaucha August Hermann Francke founded his schools and orphan house from 1695, and the missionaries sent to Tranquebar in 1706 studied at its university.
Halle stands on the river Saale. August Hermann Francke was minister at Glaucha, just outside the city, where the foundation of his orphan house was laid in July 1698 (Francke, Footsteps of Divine Providence ch. 1, section 28, pp. 30–31). Bartholomäus Ziegenbalg and Heinrich Plütschau were sent to the university of Halle before they went to India (Ziegenbalg, Propagation of the Gospel in the East, preliminary discourse, sections 42–43). See Spener’s Pia Desideria and the Rise of Pietism and the Tranquebar Mission.
