Herrnhut

Herrnhut, Saxony, GermanyCentral and Northern Europe

A settlement in Upper Lusatia begun in 1722 by emigrants from Moravia on the estate of Count Zinzendorf. The Moravian Church counts it the first of its congregation settlements.

Herrnhut lies in Upper Lusatia, on the slope of the Hutberg beside the road between Löbau and Zittau. The Moravian Church’s history says that the first tree for its first house was felled on 17 June 1722, and that the count’s steward gave the place its name, which it explains as “the Lord’s Watch” (Memorial-Days of the Renewed Church of the Brethren, pp. 28–32). The same history calls it the firstling of all the church’s congregation places (Memorial-Days of the Renewed Church of the Brethren, preface, pp. i–ii). See the Moravians at Herrnhut.

Emigrants from Moravia settle on Count Zinzendorf’s estate at Herrnhut. In 1727 they pledge themselves to common statutes, and their church dates its renewal from a communion service on 13 August of that year. In 1732 Herrnhut sends two men to the slaves of St Thomas.
