A port at the southern end of Kyushu, Japan, and the home of the convert Anjiro. Francis Xavier landed there on 15 August 1549.

Kagoshima lies on a bay at the southern end of the island of Kyushu. Francis Xavier, who spells the name Cagoxima, wrote that his ship put in there on 15 August 1549 because it could make no other port, that it was the native place of his companion Paul, Anjiro, and that the people received them kindly (Xavier, Letters, letter 79, Kagoshima, 5 November 1549, vol. 2, p. 232). He adds that the lord of the place gave his subjects leave to become Christians (Xavier, Letters, letter 79, vol. 2, p. 259). See Francis Xavier in India and Japan.
