Kodungallur

Kodungallur, Kerala, IndiaSouth and East AsiaAlso: Cranganore, Kodungalloor

Town on the coast of Kerala, also known as Cranganore. The tradition of the Syro-Malabar Church, one of the churches of the Thomas Christians of Kerala, is that the apostle Thomas landed here in AD 52.

Kodungallur lies on the Malabar coast of south-west India, north of Kochi. A chronology published by an eparchy of the Syro-Malabar Church names it, under the older form Cranganore, as the place where the apostle Thomas landed in AD 52 (Syro-Malabar Eparchy of Melbourne, Significant Dates AD 52). The earlier accounts of Thomas cited in this wiki do not name the town, and the place is marked on the map as the site of a tradition; see Thomas and India.

The Apostle Thomas and the Christians of India

Tradition holds that the apostle Thomas preached in India and died there. The oldest account cited, the Acts of Thomas, sets him at the court of a King Gundaphoros; the tradition of Kerala and Mylapore is attested later. Cosmas reports churches in India about AD 547.
