Marburg
Residence of the landgraves of Hesse, where Luther and Zwingli debated the Lord’s Supper in October 1529 and signed the Marburg Articles.
Marburg is a town on the Lahn in Hesse. In October 1529 Landgrave Philip of Hesse received the reformers at his court here; the debate was held in the prince’s chamber (Osiander, Report on Marburg report to the council of Nuremberg), and the articles that came of it are headed as written and signed at Marburg (Marburg Articles heading and signatures). In October 1529 Philip of Hesse brings Luther and Zwingli together at Marburg. They sign fourteen articles of agreement and a fifteenth recording that they could not agree whether Christ’s body and blood are bodily present in the bread and wine.
