Toledo
A city on the river Tagus in central Spain, the royal seat of the Visigothic kings. A long series of councils of the Spanish church met here, among them the council of 589 at which the Goths renounced Arianism.
The acts of the council of 589 call Toledo the royal city, civitas regia, and it was there that King Reccared I gathered the bishops of his kingdom (Council of Toledo (589) opening). Isidore of Seville says that Reccared died there (Isidore, History of the Goths 56). The collection of Spanish church law in which those acts are preserved contains the acts of more than a dozen councils held at Toledo (Acts of the Third Council of Toledo).
