Udayamperur
Town in Kerala, called Diamper in the Portuguese records. In June 1599 the archbishop of Goa held there the synod that bound the Thomas Christians of Malabar to Rome.
The acts of the synod call the place “the Town and Kingdom of Diamper”, subject to the king of Cochin, and set the synod in its church of All Saints (Synod of Diamper, title page). The summons says that it was chosen as a convenient place near the middle of the diocese (Synod of Diamper, Publication and Calling (pp. 92–93)). The churches of Kerala use the Malayalam name: a Syro-Malabar chronology speaks of “the Synod of Diamper (Udayamperoor)” (Syro-Malabar Eparchy of Melbourne, Significant Dates entry for 20 June 1599). See the Synod of Diamper and the Coonan Cross Oath.
