The Korea Pentecost and Other Experiences on the Mission Field
A Presbyterian missionary’s account of the Korean church and of the revival at Pyongyang in January 1907, at which he was present. He wrote it on furlough about three years after the events.
William Blair went to Korea in 1901 as a missionary of the Presbyterian Church in the U.S.A. and worked at Pyongyang. In the foreword he says that he wrote the book during a year of furlough to answer questions about “the great revival of 1907”, and that it gives his own recollections.
He was in the church on the nights he describes, and one of the confessions he reports was made to him. For the Monday night he quotes the account that his colleague Graham Lee wrote at the time, saying that it tells the story better than words “penned three years later” could. The book gives a missionary’s view: Korean Christians appear in it as he saw and remembered them, and the political setting is described as the mission judged it.
