Why ‘Christianity Today’?

The unsigned editorial that opened the first issue of Christianity Today and set out what the magazine was for. It is the founders’ own statement of the evangelical programme in 1956.

The editorial says that evangelical Christianity, “neglected, slighted, misrepresented”, needs a clear voice; that theological liberalism has failed to meet people’s moral and spiritual needs; and that those who direct the magazine accept without reserve the complete reliability and authority of the written word of God. It promises to apply the biblical revelation to the social crisis of the time, and adds that fundamentalism has often failed to do this. The magazine’s first editor was Carl Henry.
