Carl Henry
Theologian whose book The Uneasy Conscience of Modern Fundamentalism (1947) charged fundamentalism with neglecting the social bearing of the gospel. He was the first editor of Christianity Today.
In The Uneasy Conscience of Modern Fundamentalism Henry argued that the gospel, once a “world-changing message”, had been narrowed by fundamentalism to a “world-resisting” one (Henry, The Uneasy Conscience of Modern Fundamentalism, ch. 2, p. 30). He was the first editor of Christianity Today (Wheaton College Archives, Finding ‘A Clear Voice’ (2021)), whose first issue, dated 15 October 1956, opened with an editorial saying that the magazine would apply the biblical revelation to the social crisis of the day (Christianity Today, Why ‘Christianity Today’? (1956)). See Billy Graham and Postwar Evangelicalism.
