The Assyrian Church of the East descends from the ancient church of the Persian empire (see the Church of the East Organises at Seleucia-Ctesiphon). This declaration is an agreed statement on the person of Christ between that church and the Catholic Church, given at St Peter’s in Rome on 11 November 1994.

Its opening sentence describes both churches as heirs of the apostolic faith “as formulated by our common Fathers in the Nicene Creed”. It is cited here as a document in which the Church of the East states for itself that it holds the faith of Nicaea.
