The Catechism was asked for by the Extraordinary Synod of Bishops of 1985 and published by John Paul II with the apostolic constitution Fidei Depositum, dated 11 October 1992. It sets out Catholic teaching in four parts, on the creed, the liturgy and sacraments, the Christian way of life and prayer, in numbered paragraphs.

It is a primary source for what the Catholic Church teaches today, and it is cited in this wiki for that purpose only. Where it describes the positions of other churches, as in its note on the different ways of numbering the Ten Commandments, the description is its own.
