John Stott

English clergyman, rector of All Souls Church, Langham Place, London, from 1950 to 1975. He chaired the committee that drafted the Lausanne Covenant in 1974 and wrote a commentary on it.

John Stott was rector of All Souls Church, Langham Place, London, from 1950 to 1975. At the congress at Lausanne in July 1974 he chaired the committee that drafted the Lausanne Covenant, with Hudson Armerding and Samuel Escobar. He describes in the preface to his commentary how three drafts were written and how the last was revised in the light of many hundreds of comments from the participants (Stott, The Lausanne Covenant: An Exposition and Commentary, editorial note and Preface). The Lausanne Movement, of which he remained honorary chairman, records that he died at Lingfield in Surrey on 27 July 2011, aged 90 (Lausanne Movement, John Stott Dies Aged 90 (2011), paragraphs 1–2 and the account of his ministry).

    The Lausanne Congress on World Evangelization

    In July 1974 some 2,700 evangelical Christians from more than 150 nations meet at Lausanne. Their covenant, drafted under John Stott, commits them to world evangelization and affirms that evangelism and social responsibility are both Christian duties.
